These objects use the Lacewing Relay protocol, but are a re-implementation from the latest version of liblacewing.

There are a few added features to Blue. Without use of these extra features, the two variants of the Client can be swapped by overwriting the MFX files, without any change to the editor code.

To ensure that these two objects should not be treated as the exact same, due to different attitudes in design, the creator of Blue, Phi, used a different icon and different name.

The compatibility was restricted somewhat when Blue was ported to Unicode, as Relay is unable to use Unicode, and thus while the bytes "on the wire" are understandable to Relay, it cannot interpret the text it then processes, resulting in text messages turning into replacements characters.

However, if you restrict yourself to ASCII messages – using the typical Latin alphabet – then both Relay and Blue will communicate readily.

More on that is discussed in Unicode notes.
